What Exactly is Methylsulfonylmethane and How Can It Benefit My Horse?

Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is a highly popular supplement in the equine world. MSM for horses is well known to support healthy joints and is said to reduce the side effects of osteoarthritis. It can be found blended with other joint-friendly supplements or in its pure form to sprinkle directly on feed. But what is it EXACTLY, and what are the benefits (and side effects)? We are big fans of MSM over here at Animal Element, and it’s a main component of 3 of our supplements. So, we decided to do a little “ingredient spotlight” to shine the light on all the benefits this supplement can offer.

The Science Behind MSM

MSM is a sulfur compound that naturally occurs in the body (human and animal) and most plant life. It’s composed of oxygen, sulfur, and carbon and is crucial in producing cartilage and collagen. [1] Sulfur is also an important component in glucosamine, keratin, and cell membrane health. Once in the body, MSM separates and forms into two important amino acids, methionine and cysteine.

Methylsulfonylmethane has been proven to be an extremely safe supplement, with no known side effects and a very short half-life once in the body. It is used up quickly, the excess being flushed from the horse’s body through urine and feces. Some certain disorders and diseases could be complicated by using MSM, so as always, be sure to consult with your veterinarian before starting a new supplement. [2]

Health Benefits of Methylsulfonylmethane

And boy are there a LOT! Because of its chemical makeup, MSM supports healthy joints, soft tissue regeneration, and reduces scar tissue. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which aid in pain relief, joint mobility, and quick muscle recovery times. This makes it a great supplement to fight the effects of osteoarthritis or old injuries.

Besides being beneficial to joints, MSM is also an antioxidant; boosting the immune system and helping rid the body of toxins by increasing the white blood cell count. It also aids in the production of Vitamins C & E. [3] This allows your horse’s immune system to fight off infections and diseases, keeping your horse healthy and strong.

Since sulfur is important to keratin production, many users of MSM report their horses’ hooves being stronger and healthier, along with improved coat and hair conditions.

According to Equimed.com, MSM has also “been helpful for horses with Equine Protozoal Myelitis (EPM), back problems, and epiphysitis, which is an inflammation of the growth centers in the joints of young horses.” [4]
